The Supreme Court shall hear the review plea filed by six states that have gone to the top court asking it to review its decision on holding Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) today.
The petition will come up before the judges today.The Supreme Court on 17 August had refused the plea for deferment of medical and engineering entrance exams, the court had refused to oblige, saying the future of the students should not be jeopardized.
Although the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-Mains for admission to engineering colleges, were held already on Tuesday, with thousands of students sitting for it amid strict precautions for coronavirus. Medical entrance exam NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), is scheduled for September 13.
Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, opposition-ruled states, had approached the apex court on 28 August seeking review of its 17 August order.
There will be a new bench to hear the plea of the states as Justice Arun Mishra, who had passed the order being challenged, has retired. The new bench will be headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan.
Around 8.58 lakh candidates registered for the JEE-Main (Joint Entrance Examination) and 15.97 lakh students for NEET.
Due to coronavirus pandemic the exams were deferred twice. On August 17, the Supreme Court had rejected petitions from 11 students to defer the exams. A number of states and political leaders had backed their demand.
Earlier over 150 academicians from various universities in India and abroad had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over compromising the future of students of the medical and engineering entrance exams are delayed.
