Bulgarian Tennis Player Grigor Dimitrov says he is “sorry for any harm I might have caused” after revealing he has tested positive for coronavirus. The player announced this on Instagram just moments before the final of the Adria Tour exhibition series in Croatia in which world No 1 Novak Djokovic was due to face Andrey Rublev. This lead to the swift cancellation of the event in Zadar as the crowd awaited their arrival. World number 19 wrote “I want to reach out and let my fans and friends know that I tested positive back in Monaco for Covid-19”.
He wrote, “I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused. I am back home now and recovering. Thanks for your support and please stay safe and healthy.”
Last weekend, Dimitrov took part in the Adria Tour Event in Belgrade with Djokovic. There was criticism that there was no social distancing at the exhibition, which took place before packed stands in Belgrade, the Serbian capital. He also played in the second leg of the Balkans tournament in Zadar on Croatia’s Adriatic coast on Saturday.
However, he withdrew after losing to Borna Coric, complaining of feeling unwell. Dimitrov said he was making his condition public because he wanted to “make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during these past days gets tested.”
Later Sunday, the final between Djokovic and Russia’s Andrey Rublev was immediately cancelled as a precaution.
