Former India captain and two-time World Cup winner, Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday (August 15) via an Instagram post. He wrote, “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired (sic)”.
MS Dhoni has been one of the best wicket-keepers to play international cricket and his illustrious career graph says it all.
“Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired,” MS Dhoni wrote along with an Instagram post of a montage capturing his career with the national team.
Dhoni, who made his international debut in 2004, featured in 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20 Internationals.
Under his leadership, India won three major ICC tournaments – the 2007 World T20, 2011 World Cup and the Champions Trophy 2013.
MS Dhoni, who had announced his retirement from Tests in 2014, has played 350 One-day Internationals (ODIs) and 98 T20 Internationals (T20Is).
In 350 ODIs, Dhoni had scored 10773 runs at an average of 50.57. He has 10 centuries and 73 fifties to his name.
Dhoni amassed 1617 runs in 98 T20Is at an average of 37.60, including two half-centuries.
Another achievement for Dhoni came in January 2019 when he became fifth Indian and 12th overall in ODI history to score 10,000 runs. The former India skipper achieved the milestone during first ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 12.
The 2011 World Cup winning captain is only the second wicketkeeper-batsman to touch the 10000-run mark. Sangakkara was the first designated wicketkeeper-batsman to achieve the landmark.
Just few minutes after MS Dhoni announced his retirement, senior Indian cricketer Suresh Raina also announced retirement from international cricket. Raina also took to Instagram to announce his retirement like Dhoni. Along with posting a pic of CSK team members, Raina wrote, “It was nothing but lovely playing with you. With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in this journey. Thank you India. Jai Hind”.
Both Dhoni and his Chennai Super Kings teammate Raina arrived in Chennai on Friday for a short training camp ahead of the IPL in UAE.
Raina competitive cricket stopped around a year ago, after the final of IPL 2019 due to a knee injury. Raina underwent a surgery last year. He had joined CSK’s training camp in March before it was cancelled.
Suresh Raina made his international debut in a tri-series in Sri Lanka in 2005.
Raina’s Test debut came around five years later in 2010, against the same opposition in Sri Lanka.
He played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for India. Raina also cemented his place as one of the best fielders ever to play the game for India.
